Chanel
The gold standard of designer perfumery
Chanel is the French fashion house whose 1921 fragrance launch, Chanel No. 5, became the most famous perfume in modern history. Founded by Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel — known as Coco — the maison built its fragrance reputation on a single revolutionary decision: hire a perfumer to create something that did not smell like a flower. The result, an aldehyde-rich floral composition, broke every convention of early 20th-century perfumery and established Chanel as the brand against which all luxury fragrance is measured.
The Founder's Story
Gabrielle Chanel was born in 1883 in a poorhouse in Saumur, France, and spent her early years in an orphanage where the nuns taught her to sew. She built her fashion business in the 1910s from a millinery shop in Deauville, became the defining couture designer of the 1920s, and decided in 1921 that her clientele needed a fragrance to match. She hired Ernest Beaux, the Russian-French perfumer who had worked for the Romanov court, and asked him for something modern. Beaux developed ten sample compositions and presented them numbered. Chanel selected the fifth — and the rest, as the saying goes, is history. Coco Chanel died in 1971 at the Hotel Ritz in Paris.
Heritage & Timeline
Chanel No. 5 launched on the fifth day of the fifth month — 5 May 1921 — to mark Coco Chanel's lucky number. Other landmark releases followed: No. 22 (1922), Cuir de Russie (1924), Bois des Iles (1926), No. 19 (1971), Coco (1984), Chance (2003), Coco Mademoiselle (2001), and Bleu de Chanel (2010). Marilyn Monroe famously told Life Magazine in 1952 that she wore nothing to bed but Chanel No. 5 — a quote that ran the brand's marketing for the next seventy years. Chanel acquired Bourgeois Holding in 1924, retained the perfumer Henri Robert (uncle of Guy Robert who created Amouage Gold), and developed in-house perfumer roles that today produce its current head perfumer Olivier Polge.
Signature Style
Chanel's fragrance house is built on aldehydic florals — Coco Chanel's original brief to Ernest Beaux for No. 5 reportedly was something that smelled like a woman, not a flower. The aesthetic is restrained, sophisticated, deliberately undecorated. Bottles are classic Chanel: rectangular, minimal, signed only with the interlocking double-C logo. Concentration is typically eau de parfum or eau de toilette; longevity is moderate by modern standards, reflecting the brand's preference for elegance over projection. The Les Exclusifs collection — restricted to Chanel boutiques — houses the most exclusive compositions including Sycomore, Coromandel, and 1932.

Did You Know?
5 was launched on 5 May 1921 — the fifth day of the fifth month — to honour Coco Chanel's belief that 5 was her lucky number.
The original Ernest Beaux composition included a high percentage of synthetic aldehydes, which was deliberately revolutionary at a time when perfumery was dominated by single-flower compositions.
Marilyn Monroe's 1952 Life Magazine quote — that she wore nothing to bed but five drops of Chanel No.
5 — became the most famous celebrity fragrance endorsement of all time.
5 is still reportedly the world's best-selling perfume, with a bottle sold every 30 seconds globally.
The fragrance is so iconic that an original 1921 bottle sits in the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection.
